Courses

Courses

Courses are available dealing with the regional geology of North Africa and Arabia. These may be suitable for both oil companies operating in the region and Academic institutions based in the MENA area.
A second group of courses focus on sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy and petroleum geology on a university level and may be suitable for training up junior geologists within companies as well as university students.

Course: Petroleum Geology of North Africa

The course gives a comprehensive overview of North African geology, from the Pan-African Orogeny to the Pleistocene wet times. All major play elements are discussed and their specifics studied. The course combines power point presentations with video clips showing outcrops and graphic animations. Depending on the amount of detail needed, the course may run for 1-3 days.

Course: Introduction into Petroleum Geology

This course gives a comprehensive overview of petroleum geology. It is suitable for advanced BSc or MSc students or may be a good refresher for junior company geologists. The course combines powerpoint presentations and exercises. Depending on the time available and the amount of detail required, the course may run from 2-7 days. From a didactical point of view half-day sessions may be preferred, instead of full-day sessions.

Course: Introduction into Sedimentology and Facies Analysis

This course gives an introduction into sedimentology and facies analysis. Depositional environments and sedimentary facies are reconstructed based on a combined analysis of lithology, sedimentary structures and fossil content. Modern analogues will help to better understand the facies concepts. The course uses a large number of outcrop and core photographs to illustrate the facies discussed. The theoretical course may be followed by an optional 1-3 days field excursion. Depending on the time available and the amount of detail required, the course may run from 2-10 days. From a didactical point of view half-day sessions may be preferred, instead of full-day sessions.

Course: Introduction into Sequence Stratigraphy

This course gives an introduction into sequence stratigraphy. Facies analysis, seismic stratal geometries and interpreted sea level changes form the data basis of sequence stratigraphy. The course combines power point presentations with excercises.

Course: Black Shales

This course gives an overview about the sedimentology, geochemistry, and ecological models of organic-rich shales. Applied geological aspects will be discussed, including black shales as hydrocarbon source rocks and oil shales. Course duration: 1-2 days

Other Courses

Other courses may be taught as needed, e.g. geological mapping courses (both lab and field).
